Pat Umbra talks with voters...

Sue Palmer on the horn for the GOP...
County Chairman Terry Casey was on hand for the critical first evening (you can read the Times Leader's August 17 interview with Terry by clicking here). Everything went smoothly, and our 6th District was well-represented among the volunteers on the first night of calling...but we can do better. Our County Party needs all the support we can offer to help GOP candidates win in November! Stop in and find out how you can volunteer! The new Headquarters are located at: 25 Public Square, Wilkes-Barre (next to Rite Aid)!

A pair of important Absentee Ballot dates are approaching.
Tuesday, October 28 is the deadline for applications for absentee ballots.
An important note from the Luzerne County BOE website regarding applications for Absentee Ballots:
A voter may appear in person at the Bureau of Elections any time prior to the deadline to make application for a civilian absentee ballot. Voters may also hand deliver applications on behalf of other voters in the same way they may deliver an application to register to vote. However, the ballot itself may only be delivered to the voter himself or herself. In other words, if you are the applicant, you will receive only your ballot and not that of anyone else.
Friday, October 31 is another key date: It's the deadline for submitting most Absentee Ballots.
Here are more important notes from the BOE website on submitting voted Absentee Ballots:
All voted absentee ballots; except those received from military and overseas electors, and emergency absentee electors, as defined by law, must be received by the county board of elections by 5:00 PM on this day to be counted.
A voter may appear in person at the Bureau of Elections any time prior to the deadline to deposit their own voted ballot into a ballot box for such purpose.
On the day of the deadline, voters also have the option of placing the proper postage upon the voted absentee ballot and giving it to the postal worker at the public counter of the main branch of the post office on South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. The postal worker will hand cancel the postage and hold it for a representative of the Bureau of Elections who will collect those voted absentee ballots for processing at 4:45 PM.

Valerie Caras of the Northeast Pennsylvania Victory Field Staff wrote recently to let us know that John McCain's NEPA regional Headquarters in Dallas is fully operational.
Folks: They need our help!
"Anyone willing to stop by and give even a few hours a week would be a HUGE help," Valerie wrote. "Since this is such a key area in a swing state, our success will be largely in part to our grassroots activities."
The Regional Headquarters is located at:
Victory/McCain
23 Dallas Shopping Center

We will keep you posted with details when we get them...

Pain at the Pump...
Folks, I don't know about you...but I'm tired of watching my paycheck fritter away with each hike in gas prices. I wince every time I get heating oil. I grimace whenever the air conditioner kicks on.
Energy isn't cheap, and it gets more expensive with each passing day.
I thought it might be useful to post a little something on how Republicans and Democrats approach solving the current energy crisis...and make no mistake, it's a crisis.
Republican Solutions:

More drilling...

More refineries...

Promote Coal...

...and Nuclear Power...

...and Renewable Energy, like Wind...

...and Solar Power!
The Democrat's Solutions:

Raise Taxes...

Lower Thermostats...

Put on a 'Carter Cardigan'...

...and everything will be just fine!
Let's face it folks...when it comes to solving our energy crisis the Democrats are...

...OUT OF GAS!
Four years ago, I was elected a Committee Member. It was a very, very tight race. I won by just one vote. (The only vote, in fact...and a write-in to boot!)
Almost immediately, I wondered what I'd gotten myself into. I had no idea what a Committee Member actually does. I just wanted to get involved, and hopefully make a difference.
At our recent 6th District Committee Convention, there were a number of new faces...and the same question I had when I started: What does a Committee Person do?
To help you get off to a "fast start," here is some basic information:
DUTIES OF A REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE MEMBER
The Committee Member’s primary goal is to elect qualified Republicans to office and to promote the principles of the Republican Party. The Committee Member is active throughout the year, interacting with the voters and working to elect qualified Republicans to office. These responsibilities do not just occur on Election Day.The main duties of Committee Members are:
· Communicate with and service the voters.
· Circulate Candidate Nominating Petitions.
· Register Republican voters.
· Deliver Absentee Ballots to voters.
· Canvass with candidates.
· Distribute campaign material before an election.
· Make get-out-the-vote phone calls.
· Cover the poll on election day.
· Recruit and train volunteers.
· Identify, recruit, select, and support qualified Republican candidates.
· Help with Republican fund-raisers.
· Vote on endorsement of Republican candidates.
· Attend Republican meetings and events.
These duties may seem like a very big responsibility...but if you take it step-by-step and develop a well laid out plan in advance, you will find being a Committee Member is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences that you will ever have.
The Pennsylvania GOP publishes a great pamphlet called Winning Begins With You! It's a great overview of your new role. Simply click the link below to read the pamphlet:

We salute those who have given us a most precious gift...our Freedom...keep them in your thoughts this Christmas...
If you couldn't make the annual 6th District Republican Committee Christmas Party, you missed a memorable evening.
Just a month or so after being declared "dead," we filled the room with enthusiastic Republicans and guests who celebrated the rebirth or Republican Spirit in Luzerne County.
A happy crowd, a slate of engaging speakers, terrific food, plus some fun and song showed we "dead" Republicans are very, very much alive.

Social Hour...

Great food...
With a few words by County Commissioner Steve A. Urban before our meal, and Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta as the featured after-dinner speaker, the inevitable result was a party that ended our year on a decided high note and positioned us to face the challenges ahead.

Lou Barletta fires up the room...
And that wasn't all.
We even had a little fun with a rousing game of "Pin the Debit Card on the Democrat."

A rousing game of "Pin the Debit Card on the Democrat..."
The evening ended with everyone standing together to sing two verses of "God Bless America."
Folks, it was a wonderful, wonderful evening. Our best days lie ahead. It truly is a great time to be a Republican!
